Burner Head and Cap

The burner head and cap is the pair of loose pieces that decide what shape a flame takes: a ring of drilled ports for the gas to leave through, and the disc that lies over the middle and sends it sideways instead of upwards. Neither is bolted down, and either can go back wrong.

Why they lift off at all
Sealed burners are built to come apart in the hands of the person who cooks on them, because they are what a pot boils over onto. The head carries the ports; the cap covers the centre so the flame emerges at the rim instead of straight up. Finding the right position is a matter of feel rather than of looking: a piece that is seated settles the last fraction on its own and then will not rock under a fingertip, and one that rocks is not seated, whatever it looks like from above.
Warped, blocked, or simply back on crooked
Crooked is the commonest and the easiest: the cap rides proud, the flame leans or lifts off, and half a turn cures it. Blocked comes next, with ports clogged where the spill ran in, so the ring burns with holes in it. Warped is the one that ends in a replacement — years of heat, or a cold cap dropped into a wet burner, and the disc will not lie flat anywhere. Keep a set in order while you clean them, because the sizes on one cooktop are not always alike.

Are the burner caps interchangeable?
